Celiac Disease Affects Hotel Babylon star Michael Obiora

When cameras rolled on the set of BBC TV series Hotel Babylon, Michael Obiora sprang into life as flamboyant receptionist Ben Trueman. What viewers never guessed was that the actor was battling an incurable disease, which at times left him so exhausted his speech would slur.

‘Sometimes I was wiped out by 10am,’ says Michael, 23. ‘I felt I needed to eat something to boost my energy levels, but anything I ate went straight through me. I was dehydrated and felt I was losing all my strength.’ He had been to his GP to discuss his stomach problems, but was only diagnosed with coeliac disease two years ago.
