For many Americans, an allergy to gluten means a lifetime without treats like cookies, cheesecake, or bread. So Cranberry’s Grocery & Eatery in Staunton, Virginia is making a point of now offering more appealing options—and more local options—for those afflicted. The popular Staunton spot was certified in 2009 for its gluten-free menu by the Gluten-Free Awareness Program, which aims to serve people with celiac disease or other allergies to wheat, barley, and rye. They have added gluten-free bread and gluten-free desserts to their menu and dedicated a section of the kitchen to the preparation of gluten-free entrees.

Founded in 2003 by Kathleen Stinehart, former dean for academic outreach at nearby Mary Baldwin College, Cranberry’s goal is to bring you organic, natural, healthful and delicious foods. Designated as a “Virginia Green” business in 2008, Cranberry’s is a local, independent, family business, and enjoys having customers tell them what healing foods they like to eat and buy these days. Here’s to your health and a wonderful time at Cranberry’s!

Custom Choice Cereal, located in Durham, North Carolina, is a company that allows celiacs and other consumers enjoying a gluten-free or wheat-free lifestyle to customize their own cereal mixes from a variety of entirely gluten-free ingredients. The idea is very simple: through an intuitive online platform, you can choose a base mix and add any combination of your favorite dried fruits, nuts, and seeds to your cereal. Because they believe that your cereal should be as individual as you are, you can even name your mix. Custom Choice Cereal then mixes your cereal and ships it conveniently to your doorstep.

All of us love variety in our food, and cereals certainly are no exception. Unfortunately, consumers on a gluten-free diet often struggle finding a variety of cereal mixes that are both delicious and safe to eat because most cereals are based on wheat, rye, or barley and therefore contain gluten. Inspired by the lacking variety of gluten-free or wheat-free cereal products, a couple of students eager to alleviate this problem and change the marketplace developed a business plan for a gluten-free cereal company during their second year of the MBA program at UNC’s Kenan-Flagler Business School. And the rest, as they say, is history!

Please visit their website, and let us know what you think about their products! www.customchoicecereal.com
