To provide consistency among food products labeled gluten-free, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is in the process of developing rules that would apply to all gluten-free products in the market. Creating standard rules for all food companies to follow will assist consumers looking for gluten-free foods. To learn more about the new FDA proposed rule and for updates on its status, visit: www.cfsan.fda.gov/~dms/lab-cat.html#1gluten.

Living Harvest Foods, of Portland, Oregon, offers an entire line of gluten-free, soy-free, dairy-free, and nut-free goods. It all started with a seed – small enough to sprinkle on your morning yogurt, but big enough to deliver more essential nutrients than most vegetables in the garden. Their family called it “The Little Giant”. Living Harvest was founded by vegetarians, looking to improve their health with whole food nutrition. The search for a foundational protein source led them first to examine wild rice. Soon, they obtained a grant from the University of Saskatchewan Food Science Center to study improvements to the hulling process for wild rice. The Center’s scientists encouraged them to also consider hemp as a possible high-protein food source. Research showed that the hemp seed’s balanced composition of essential fatty acids, essential amino acids and high quality protein created the ideal Foundation Food source they were seeking.

Discovering its surprising food value, they knew they were onto something. Here was a seed that could both feed the world and help the planet- a renewable resource, with natural nutrition. It was a chance to improve health and improve the planet at the same time.

Early on, it seemed like a lofty goal to bring hemp foods to the grocery aisle. But once they saw what great-tasting products could be created, they knew the goal was within reach. Today, their proprietary processes for producing hemp milk, frozen desserts and more has brought their products into many homes as a staple of everyday diets. Their long and deep history with hemp foods has also put them in the enviable position of being a small, independent company that leads the industry, with more expertise than any other hemp foods company.

Hemp’s nutritional makeup includes digestible protein, essential amino acids and valuable essential fatty acids (EFA’s) Omega-3 and Omega-6, known as “good fats”, and essential to everyone’s diet. But hemp’s benefits don’t stop there. It’s also an ideal renewable resource – a hardy crop that can be grown without pesticides or herbicides. Living Harvest maximizes the naturally nutritious properties of the hemp seed and has translated that into an entire line of gluten-free, soy-free, dairy-free, and nut-free goods.

Uli Mana of Asheville, North Carolina is a dessert company. UliManaMana, or UliMana for short, was incorporated on July 13, 2005 (a very good day astrologically) and may very well be the first raw chocolate company ever! They are also inadvertently catering to the gluten-free community, because their sweets and treats are made from raw, vegan ingredients — all of which happen to be naturally gluten-free. Inspired by natural health advocate and speaker, David Wolfe, Uli Mana’s organic chocolate treats were transformed from a few desserts to an entire line of wholesome products — all available for purchase via the internet.

Handmade, vegan, raw chocolate truffles, raw chocolate brownies, raw chocolate-dipped date rolls, nutritive cacao spreads, hot chocolate mixes, and superfood treats!

If you’re looking to start a gluten-free diet, or to simply experiment with gluten-free eating for the new year, make sure you aren’t distracted or discouraged by the common myths surrounding GF lifestyles:

1. Gluten-free food is tasteless and unsatisfying
2. Gluten-free food is expensive
3. Gluten-free cooking is very time-consuming.

These myths can be deterrents to better health and make you question your commitment. These top three myths are easily debunked because they don’t take the reality of naturally gluten-free foods that everyone already eats and enjoys into consideration. With so many people already eating gluten-free and experiencing thriving health, don’t let a few misconceptions stand in your way.

The availability of gluten-free products has significantly improved over the past few years. Stores such as Whole Foods Market have extensive displays of gluten-free foods, but the niche also has gone mainstream, with gluten-free products by such major manufacturers as General Mills and Anheuser-Busch.

General Mills ventured into the gluten-free market because several employees and their relatives had gluten intolerance. Dena Larson, marketing manager for the baking products division of General Mills, which owns Betty Crocker, said what struck the staff was that gluten-sensitive people were excluded from the “sweet moments of life — family moments sharing a cake, being able to reward your son with a cookie when he gets off the bus. Those are the things we take for granted, but it’s emotional to have those things taken away from you.”

Development of the products moved swiftly — “because we were very targeted” — and they were introduced in June of 2009. Increased awareness also spurred General Mills to create a website highlighting their gluten free products. www.LiveGlutenFreely.com lists more than 200 products under the brand names Yoplait, Progresso, Betty Crocker, Larabar, and Chex – and according to General Mills – more are in the pipeline.

“Most people with celiac disease would love to have their own kitchen. With a kitchen that was free of gluten, cooking would be much less of a hassle. However, most people, whether they have dietary restrictions or not, don’t have their own kitchen. So how can a gluten-free individual share a kitchen with someone who has no dietary restrictions without getting sick? By using separate kitchen equipment, squeeze bottles, good cleanliness habits, and careful dish washing, cross-contamination in a shared kitchen can be avoided.”
